Our public schools are in crisis due to funding held hostage by state leadership pushing a voucher plan that will only benefit a few. Since 2019, public school funding has been reduced by $10 billion per year (in real dollars), or about $1,300 per student, with no increase for inflation. Federal COVID and ESSA funding that helped districts fill the gaps is over. The majority of Texas school districts are operating in the red this year and making cuts, increasing class sizes and reducing services. In 2024, Texas ranked in the bottom five states for school funding. Meanwhile, we are projected to have over $25 billion in the "Rainy Day Fund" meant to help schools out during a crisis, as well as a $21 billion budget surplus.
