'Those Who Always Run to Trouble Were Never More Amazing': Texas AFL-CIO Salutes Workers Who Braved Ice Storm

  The Texas AFL-CIO today saluted First Responders and infrastructure workers who labored mightily to meet the needs of Texans during the deadly ice storm that killed hundreds of Texans and left millions shivering in their homes and, in many cases, out of tap water.  “A year ago this week, in the darkest and coldest of times, firefighters, police, emergency technicians and other First Responders excelled at what they do every day – doing their utmost to protect Texans,” Texas AFL-CIO President Rick Levy said.  “Taking care of one another became the work of all of us. So many found a way to help – electricians, plumbers, grocery store workers, communications workers, news reporters, and a host of other occupations – and made certain Texans could connect to what they needed to ride out some of the most traumatic days of our lives. For teachers and school employees, the community became their classrooms as they delivered water, food and other essentials to students and their families.”  “And they did all this in the midst of a pandemic,” Levy said. “Yet when disaster struck, those who always run to trouble were never more amazing.”   “The Texas AFL-CIO joins all of Texas in honoring the memory of those who died in the ice storm. And we redouble our admiration and respect for all workers who save lives, comfort victims of disaster, and provide the infrastructure that helps us get by every day.”  The Texas AFL-CIO is the state labor federation consisting of 240,000 affiliated union members who advocate for working families in Texas.
