We're Hiring: Texas Immigrant Worker Project Coordinator
The Texas AFL-CIO is a statewide labor federation serving as the leading voice for working families in Texas. We are seeking a Texas Immigrant Worker Project Coordinator to work with our affiliate unions, central bodies and community allies to deliver services and run campaigns to assist and empower immigrant workers in this state.
Central to the job is continuing to operate our successful citizenship clinic model in communities across the state. This model includes holding clinics to assist legal permanent residents in Texas who are eligible for citizenship to become citizens, following through with applicants to make sure they become voters, and connecting applicants and others in the immigrant community to quality job training and employment opportunities.
In addition, the coordinator will develop a broader range of services to support immigrant workers, including assistance with DACA renewal, TPS adjustment and Deferred Action, all with the goal of increasing the security and the voice of immigrants in our state as well as building power for workers.
Finally, the coordinator will work with Texas AFL-CIO staff as a resource for policy and legislative work around immigration, and represent labor in immigrant coalition work.
While the work will be centered in the union movement, services provided will be available to union and non-union individuals.
The successful applicant will have a passion for building a program to lift immigrant workers and build a strong connection between the immigrant community and the labor movement. They will be familiar with and have a demonstrated commitment to the goals of the labor movement and be an effective communicator who can build trust with affiliates, members and allies. They will be hard working and conscientious.
The primary duties of the position are:
- Work with the officers, staff and affiliates of the Texas AFL-CIO in a collaborative manner to implement our proven statewide, labor based model for citizenship campaigns;
- Interface with foundations and unions to raise funds to support and broaden the program;
- Design and lead training for union officers, staff and members on the citizenship application process as well as other key issues that intersect with employment;
- Engage Union leaders and activists across the state in the work of the Texas Immigrant Workers Project;
- Connect immigrant workers to the labor movement, and the labor movement to the immigrant community;
- Organize community and workplace based events in targeted areas across the state to educate members and the community about the citizenship application process and other key issues facing immigrant workers;
- Identify and work with allies and partner organizations to accomplish the goals of the campaign;
- Implement a civic engagement component for successful applicants;
- Maintain quality and accessible data to track and document campaign progress.
Qualifications:
- Familiarity with and demonstrated commitment to the labor movement;
- Familiarity with the issues facing the immigrant community in Texas, and a generalized understanding of the legal framework for citizenship, DACA, TPS and Deferred Action;
- Demonstrated ability to raise funds to support the work;
- Experience organizing and overseeing community events.;
- Ability to work independently while also working cooperatively with others;
- Excellent organizational and time management skills;
- Be fully bilingual and fluent in reading, writing, and communicating in Spanish;
- Demonstrated experience in building unity among diverse groups and in recruiting and mobilizing others to action;
- Computer proficiency is required: database/spreadsheet, PowerPoint, e-mail, internet and work processing skills;
- Must have reliable automobile and ability to travel on a frequent basis as needed and for extended periods of time;
- Ability to work long and extended hours at times;
- Minimum of two years of experience in union or community organizing, including experience working with immigrant communities;
